How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY)

Learn how to repair a deep scratch in the paint of your car. In this case someone keyed my car so I will show you how to remove a deep scratch from that using a touch up paint pen. Fixing scratches in your car's paint is simple and if they are just clear coat scratches it is even easier.

To remove deep scratches you need to clean the scratch, sand the scratch, use touchup paint on the scratch, sand that paint smooth with the factory paint job, add clear coat, and wet sand that smooth with the factory paint. Then you can polish the whole panel and you are done!

Awesome... although this job is way cheaper than the $700+ quote, it's definitely more expensive than a $15 pain pen. Everything from spray bottle, dish soap, dish sponge, rubbing alcohol, multiple sand papers, polish, polishing pad, paper towels etc. Not everyone can do it, but I'd rather pay the $700

For 15 bucks a paint pen does wonders... oh and like $30 worth of sandpaper, polish, buffing pads, sponges, gloves, soapy wooder, and alcohol. Oh and about an entire day's worth of your time... pretty sure if you're like me and put a monetary value on your time that is more than like 30 bucks an hour, you're better off just getting it repainted.

Hi ChrisFix! Your videos are very helpful. I wish you good luck! Quick question: You use that soapy water a lot. I'm curious, what kind of soap do you use? Can it be a car soap like wash N wax, or it should be very basic soap, that does not contain advanced chemical materials like wax or oils. Should it be simple cleaning soap? Thanks in advance.

White is probably not the worst color to match, but on my silver metallic Ford, the color of the touch up pen is nowhere near the color of my car, which sucks ass 😨 It´s an original touch up paint pen and the paint of the car hasn´t really faded and still looks great

I’m truly impressed. A homeless guy scratched the hell out of my car at a stoplight and then fled on his bicycle. I don’t care if it’s not quite perfect since it’s my daily beater/commuter so I’m not going to pay a body shop. I’m going to try to do as you’ve shown. Without close inspection the scratch is no longer visible. I have three large circular scratches on two panels, one is the hood. It will be a lot of work but I will try.

Excellent video. I can't believe anyone would watch this and then dislike it, but it takes all sorts... Is there any merit in using less white paint? I'm thinking, you are filling the scratch with white paint until it bulges out, then you make it smooth and level, then you add clear coat. When you add clear coat at this stage, it will sit on top of the level white paint and be higher than the surrounding surface. If you then smooth that out, are you not removing all the clear coat? What if you put white paint down, say two coats and then built it up further with clear coat, before leveling it? I know it will be difficult to get a white coat just exactly in the scratch and keep it inside the scratch, but even you can do it in some places, then you will be leveling clear coat on clear coat. Do you think that would work?

I just followed your process, but I found that when I sanded the scratch after applying the clear coat, I ended up sanding it off ... If you sand the paint so that it's even with the surrounding area, when you add the clear coat, won't you be above it, therefore making it easy to sand it off ? Am I missing something ? Thanks.

I don't understand, why you firstly fill scratch with base paint to the level, and then add clear coat on top of it. So after polishing excessive coat back to the level, isn't all the clear coat will be gone and reveal naked base paint? And besides it, according to your slides, clear coat should take bigger part of whole paint layer, but what you are doing is opposite.

This might sound kinda silly. But, I definitely don't want to screw this up. I was thinking about getting a panel off of a junk car and practicing on it a couple of times before I actually work on my own car. I've never done anything remotely even close to this. And I don't want to cause even worse damage. My car gets tiny chips on the front end from loose gravel on the road. It sucks living in country areas. They constantly drop loose rocks down some of these country roads, supposedly to help add better grip and traction control. But, I am gonna practice a few times and see how that goes first. Practice makes perfect, right?..
